LSM hose pump pumps food residues in Büttelborn

At Biolog GmbH in Büttelborn, south of Frankfurt, approximately 25,000 tonnes of food waste and organic by-products are processed every year. The facility receives surplus food, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, and food waste from commercial kitchens, which are processed for use in biogas production or composting.

After reception, the material is shredded and sorted to remove plastic, metal, and other unwanted contaminants. The remaining biomass is a fibrous, particle-laden slurry that places high demands on the pumping technology.

To ensure reliable biomass transfer, the plant is equipped with an LSM 100 peristaltic hose pump, which transports the material to the storage tanks. The solution was selected after previous progressive cavity pumps experienced excessive wear caused by abrasive particles such as plastic fragments, glass, metal, and bone residues.

According to the plant's operations management, the LSM hose pump has significantly reduced maintenance requirements. While the previous pumps typically had to be replaced after only 3–4 weeks of operation, the hose pump operates for 6–7 months before the hose needs replacing. The extended service life results in lower operating costs, fewer unplanned shutdowns, and a more reliable production process.

LSM's peristaltic hose pumps are specifically designed for demanding media with high solids content and abrasive particles, where operational reliability and low maintenance costs are essential.
