LSM pumps for agriculture and biogas plants

LSM Pumper has many years of experience supplying pumping solutions to the agricultural and agri-food industries. As a natural extension of our product range, we now also supply pumps for biogas plants, where they are used to transport biomass through different stages of the process.

Biomass is organic material that can be used as a renewable source of energy. It can include agricultural crops, animal manure, municipal and industrial waste, as well as various by-products from the food and slaughterhouse industries.

Examples of biomass from agriculture and the food industry include:

Manure containing feed residues, such as chopped straw and fibres
Slurry and sludge from wastewater treatment plants
Silage, maize and sugar beet
Straw as well as fruit and vegetable waste
Organic waste, meat and fat residues from slaughterhouses

Biomass can have very different properties and may contain fibres, sand and other solid particles. This places high demands on the pumping equipment used.

From raw biomass to biogas

At a biogas plant, raw biomass is pumped from different storage tanks into a larger digester. Here, the biomass is heated and, under controlled conditions, the organic material is broken down by bacteria through an anaerobic digestion process.

During the process, biogas is produced and collected at the top of the digester before being transferred to storage and subsequent use. The biogas can, among other applications, be used for the production of heat and energy.

After the digestion process, a remaining material known as digestate is produced. Depending on the plant's process and applicable regulations, the digestate can be used as a fertiliser on agricultural land.

LSM peristaltic hose pumps can be used to transport raw biomass between different storage tanks and onwards to the digester, where the digestion process takes place.

Larger biogas plants often have several storage tanks containing different types of biomass. In these installations, a single LSM hose pump can provide a flexible solution that can be connected to different tanks and used to transfer biomass to the central digester.

This can make it possible to consolidate several pumping tasks into one flexible solution while handling media with varying compositions.

A pumping solution for demanding media

Biomass can be a challenging pumping medium due to its content of fibres, sand and other solid materials. Straw, plant residues and other particles can, for example, create challenges for traditional pump designs, particularly when the medium tends to accumulate or change its flow direction.

LSM peristaltic hose pumps are designed to handle demanding media and can therefore be a suitable solution for transporting biomass in biogas plants.
